The life of an author can be interesting. Especially when it comes to the reaction of those closest to you

For me, its still a coming out process. Some of my family knows I write and that I've been published but they don't *know* what I write. If that makes sense. I about gave my DH a heart attack when he picked up Bending to Break. Yikes.
I try to keep my writing to myself, but my very close family (sister, cousin, brother) they give me a lot of support for going out there and exploring my dream

I surprised quite a few people with the content of the novel, so most learned when the first book was published, except my absolutely intimate real life friends, and my online readers.

At first I was excited and wanted to tell everybody. But I quickly realized that not everybody will understand. I've been met with everything from jealous (now-ex) co-workers and jealous relatives, to being told I would burn in hell for writing sex scenes. And no, I'm not kidding.
My husband, my dad, and my two closest friends have been my biggest support. It wasn't until the third book in my series was under contract that my mother started to show a little bit of support.
But, it really doesn't matter when it comes down to it. Did people's opinions used to matter? Sure. It can still hurt my feelings, but I'm following my dream. And I'm not going to let them stop me.

Wow, you weren't the only one who got the "burning in hell?" That one stung a bit. But, I agree. You just have to move forward. Its not the content that I write which defines me. Its the act of writing itself.

I tell people I write romance books. I used to get little digs from my other half's side of the family, always asking how my writing was going, knowing that I was still unpublished....and then I got published. The silence became infinite...hehe

Great poll! I had tons of support from DH and kids...actually, Matt sits patiently while I read him every word, took over the finances and a bunch of the business part of my writing, leaves me alone to write when I need it, and even performs well and immediately after I've written a particularly hot scene by...well, never mind. No, ladies, you may not have him...~sigh~ M:)

It was just 'my' hobby to everyone. But then they saw it on the internet and the reactions have been mixed. Happy that I've published something. Stunned at the content.
My 25 year old calls it 'smut' - so I had a ball cap made that says 'It's Not Smut' for him only. He had me autograph it and it's hanging on his living room wall as a collectors item. Word has traveled back to mom that he brags about me and the fact he has a one of a kind hat.

The only person who knew right away was my DH and that's because he was standing behind me when I read the acceptance letter from Changeling Press, LOL! Other than that, I waited until the first book was out and a second accepted before I told my immediate family and two close friends.
Since I have three kids, I get asked what I do a lot. When I say I'm a freelance writer, the first thing nearly everyone asks is "You write children's books?" To which I respond 'no' and try to head the conversation off at the pass with an added "I write adult fiction." That almost always appeases the questioner without embarrassing them. Personally, I don't care if everyone knows what I write - but I've found that people are either very embarrassed or they start pelting me with a million sex questions, ROFL!

Since Bree and I were going to be writing together, it was crucial that we have our husbands' support. Also, it's a lot harder to keep things a secret when there are two of you...even if you wanted to! LOL
We joined RWA, built a website, and got to work. And we told everyone we knew that we were doing it.
